SUMMARY. — A propos of a recent work on Fermat by M. S. Mahoney, the author, after giving several details about the works of 16th and 17th century mathematicians (Clavius and Albert Girard in particular), stresses Fermaťs « adégalité » and the different meanings Fermat gives to that term. He then shows the fundamental use made by Fermat in the calculus of infinitesimals of the concept of « affinité », long before Euler introduced that word into mathematics. Finally, he clears up several questions relating especially, to « Cavalieri's principle. »

RÉSUMÉ. — A propos d'un ouvrage récent de M. S. Mahoney sur Fermat, l'auteur, après avoir donné quelques précisions sur les œuvres de mathématiciens des XVIe et XVIIe siècles (en particulier Clavius et Albert Girard), insiste sur « l'adégalité » de Fermat et les diverses significations que celui-ci lui donne. Il montre ensuite l'usage fondamental qu'il fait en calcul infinitésimal de l'affinité, bien avant qu'Euler n'ait introduit ce vocable en géométrie. Il soulève enfin quelques questions relatives, en particulier, au « principe de Cavalieri ».
