SUMMARY. — Contrary to the received view, a close connection exists between Brouwer's topological works and his philosophy of mathematics. Brouwer arrived at his main results by abandoning the abstract methods of general (or point-set) topology and opting instead for a combinatorial approach that seeks to make topological concepts arithmetic. In this article I investigate the genesis of Brouwer's notion of the « degree » of a mapping and the discovery of the equivalence of the existence of fixed points in a topological mapping and the existence of singularities in the field of vectors tangent to the sphere.

RÉSUMÉ. — Contrairement à l'opinion reçue, il existe un lien étroit entre les travaux topologiques de Brouwer et sa philosophie des mathématiques. Brouwer a obtenu ses principaux résultats en délaissant les méthodes abstraites de la topologie générale des ensembles de points au profit d'une approche combinatoire qui cherche à arithmétiser les concepts topologiques. Le présent article examine la genèse de la notion brouwérienne de « degré » d'une application, et la découverte de l'équivalence entre l'existence de points fixes dans une application topologique et l'existence de singularités dans les champs de vecteurs tangents à la sphère.
