SUMMARY. — This contribution to the biography of G. Canguilhem purports, with the help of personal and family memories, to emphasize the connection between scholarly and civic commitments, leading unavoidably to involvement in war. I go on to stress the importance of Léon Brunschvicg's teaching informing a brand of rationalism in progress and never definitive. The early conversion from Alain's pacifism to a lucid antifascism taking into account the fact of war is examined. Canguilhem 's close personal and intellectual relationship with Jean Cavaillès, as well as his postmortem tribute to his friend, is essential in order to understand his career. The final quotation is taken from a less well known text of 1986.
