On sait, particulièrement depuis les travaux de P. Tannery, qu'il existe un traité anonyme de calcul indien, sensiblement différent de celui de Maxime Planude et qui lui servit de source. Dans un premier chapitre, l'auteur situe l'œuvre, datée de 1252, dans le cadre général de l'histoire de la science byzantine et occidentale, particulièrement pendant l'empire latin, sans décrire toutefois le contenu mathématique et les sources qui feront l'objet d'une étude ultérieure. Dans un second chapitre, les dix manuscrits grecs qui contiennent l'oeuvre sont décrits et classés selon une méthode basée sur le nombre de particularités communes à deux ou plusieurs d'entre eux, en vue d'obtenir un stemma complet. La dernière partie est consacrée à l'édition critique complète du traité.
