Variant readings with poor support in the manuscript tradition

This paper explores a problem known to the editors of texts with a rich manuscript tradition. Manuscripts which appear to be of little value provide a number of variant readings which are attractive enough to deserve serious consideration. Whether the editor adopts or rejects them, an attempt must be made to account for their origin. If such readings are genuine, what processes led to their survival ? If false, what explains these skilful interpolations ? The concepts of peripheral survival and interpolation are examined as they apply to Greek texts.

L'article étudie un problème connu des éditeurs de textes comportant une abondante tradition manuscrite. Des manuscrits qui semblent de peu de valeur apportent nombre de variantes assez attirantes pour mériter un examen attentif. Que l'éditeur les adopte ou les rejette, il doit tenter de rendre compte de leur origine. Si de telles leçons sont originales, quels processus leur ont permis de survivre ? Si elles sont fausses, comment expliquer ces interpolations habiles ? Les concepts de survivance périphérique et d'interpolation sont examinés dans leur application aux textes grecs.
