In the case of Sedan, the family record-book ot the Poupart de Neuflize family (private archives) and the traditional sources (Archives Nationales F 12) enable us to explain the constitution in eighteenth century France of those areas of mono-industry marked with a heavy concentration of labour force and dominated by trading manufacturers who thus control directly the supply of raw materials, the manufacturing itself, and the sale. The traders' capital, pricked by the demand and by the search for reduced costs, deliberately takes part in the up-stream industrialization process by the setting of spinning and weaving workshops in the suburban zones and in the country. Without any dangerous locking-up of capital, without mechanization, without the creation of derived poles, the traders' capital nevertheless organizes a new industrial space and a new type of social relationship wich will have to be taken into account by the nineteenth century industrializing movement.

A propos de Sedan, le livre de famille des Poupart de Neuflize (archives privées) et les sources traditionnelles (Archives Nationales F 12) permettent d'expliquer la constitution dans la France du XVIIIème siècle de pôles mono-industriels à forte concentration ouvrière, dominés par les marchands-manufacturiers qui contrôlent directement l'approvisionnement en matières premières, la finition et la vente. Le capital marchand, excité par l'offre et par la recherche des moindres coûts, n'hésite pas à participer au processus d'industrialisation vers l'amont, vers le tissage et la filature dans les zones suburbaines et dans les campagnes. Sans immobilisation dangereuse de capital fixe, sans mécanisation, sans création de pôles dérivés, le capital marchand organise cependant un nouvel espace industrie] et de nouveaux rapports sociaux avec lesquels devra compter l'industrialisation du XIXème siècle.

Voor Sedan kan het familieboek van de Poupart de Neuflize (privaatarchief) en traditio- nele bronnen (Archives Nationales F 12) verklaren hoe in het 18de eeuwse Frankrijk mono-industrièle polen ontstonden met een grote concentratie van werkkrachten onder de contrôle van handelaars- lakenwevers die zowel de toevoer van de grondstoffen, de afwerking en de verkoop in handen hadden. Het koopmanskapitaal zocht de vermindering van de kosten en aarzelde niet de industria- lisatie te bevorderen in het weven en het spinnen in suburbaine zones en op het land. Zonder de gevaarlijke immobilisatie van het eigen kapitaal, zonder de mechanisatie en zonder de oprichting van andere groeikernen, organiseert het handelskapitaal nochtans een nieuwe industriele ruimte en nieuwe sociale verhoudingen die voor de industrialisatie van de 19de eeuw van belang zijn.
