Founded on seculary traditions, the French-Polish friendship was put to the test through the hardships of World War I. Mr. Dominique Bernard analyses the fluctuations of French foreign policy caught between the high feelings of a large majority of the public and the necessity to preserve the alliance with czarist Russia. The declaration of the Grand-Duke Nicholas on August 14. 1914, promising Poland peace, a renewal of its freedom of creed and language, and self-government, ambiguous as it was satisfied the "Quai d'Orsay", but not the Polish people longing for indépendance. French policy, guided by the prudent ambassador Paléologue in Petrograd, does not look as thought it favoured this accession to indépendance in so far as it seeks above all the military support of Russia and the formal recognition of "Alsace-Lorraine". In the end Briand will have to yield to the Russian requests on March 11. 1917. The Russian revolution gave back to France and the other allied powers their freedom to act without restriction or limit in favour of the restauration of Poland.
