This number of our review constitutes the final report of a research started in 1976 under the leadership of the «A.T.P. Europe du Temps Présent», by a pluralist French and Belgian team of scholars, working within the «C.N.R.S.». The contracts then established aimed at carrying out a survey on the «Social changes, ways of life and collective representations in the North of France and in Belgium». Six major fields of study were chosen on both sides of the French-Belgian border : two areas in the regions of ancient textile industry. Halluin, in the French valley of the Lys and Andrimont, nears Verviers ; two others in the coal fields : Sallaumines (Pas-de-Calais) and Cuesmes (Borinage) ; two last ones in the Flemish country side : Gravelines and Poperinghe. Lecturers and post-graduate researchers in human sciences from the three Universities of Lille, from the Universities of Liège and Mons, and from the Vrije Universiteit of Brussel, achieved their task through the cross-study of their different sources, themselves touch-stones of their different approaches : interviews, public records and questionnaires allowed to bring into light both the actual social changes and the ways they were lived and perceived by their actors. Over a long stretch of time, the rupture of the 1950's looks prominent (general «improvement» with very often a collpase of the traditioan sociability). But one can observe that the identity of the boroughts has finally survived and has been along the century the object of a continuous reassessment and creation, becoming nowadays merely more difficult and exacting.
Ce numéro de la revue est constitué par le rapport final qu'une équipe pluridisciplinaire franco- belge présente au C.N.R.S. sur une recherche menée depuis 1976 dans le cadre de l'A. T. P. Europe du Temps Présent. Les contrats obtenus visaient à mener à bien une enquête sur «Changement social, modes de vie et représentations collectives dans le nord de la France et en Belgique». Six terrains principaux d'études ont été choisis de part et d'autre de la frontière franco-belge : deux zones dans des régions de vieille industrie textile : Halluin, dans la vallée française de la Lys, et Andrimont, près de Verviers ; deux autres dans les bassins houillers : Sallaumines (Pas-de-Calais) et Cuesmes (Borinage) ; deux autres enfin dans le pays flamand : Gravelines et Poperinghe. Des enseignants-chercheurs en sciences humaines des trois universités de Lille, des universités de Liège, de Mons et de la Vrije Universiteit de Bruxelles ont mené à bien leur tâche grâce au croisement des sources, elles-mêmes pierres de touche des approches : entretiens, archives et questionnaires ont permis de déceler à la fois le changement social réel et la façon dont il était vécu et perçu par les acteurs. Dans le temps long, la rupture des années 1950 paraît importante («progrès» avec souvent effondrement de la sociabilité traditionnelle). Mais l'on observe que l'identité des communes a pu être maintenue et qu'elle a été partout depuis un siècle une remise en cause et une création continues, devenues simplement à présent plus difficiles et plus exigeantes.
Dit nummer bevat het eindrapport dat een Frans-Belgisch pluridisciplinair team heeft'voorgelegd aan het C.N.R.S., over een onderzoek dat binnen de A. T. P. «Europe du Temps Présent» sedert 1976 gevoerd werd. Het contract voorzag in het uitvoeren van een enquête over «Sociale verande- ring, levenswijze en collectieve voorstellingen in Noordfrankrijk en België». Er werden zes studiegebieden gekozen aan beide zijden van de Frans-Belgische grens : twee zones in streken met een oude textielindustrie (Halluin in de Franse Leievallci en Andrimont bij Verviers), twee in de kolenbekkens (Sallaumines in de Pas-de-Calais en Cuesmes in de Borinage) en tenslotte twee in het Vlaamse land (Gravelines en Poperinge). Docenten en onderzoekers in de menselijke wetenschappen van de drie Rijselse universiteiten en de universiteiten van Luik, Bergen (Mons) en de Vrije Universiteit Brussel hebben hun taak uitge- voerd via de vergelijking van de bronnen, die de aard van het onderzoek bepaalden : gesprekken, archieven en vragenlijsten. Dat heeft het mogelijk gemaakt na te gaan wat de werkelijke sociale veranderingen waren en hoe die door de bevolking beleefd en beschouwd werden. In een ruimer tijdperspectief stelt men vast dat de breuk van de jaren 50 veel belang heeft («voo- ruitgang» met vaak de ineenstorting van de traditionele sociabiliteit). Men stelt ook vast dat de iden- titeit van de gemeenten werd behouden en dat zij overal al een eeuw lang in een procès verkeerde van voortdurende contestatie en herschepping, alleen is dit procès in de laatste jaren nogjnoeilijker geworden.
