Vandamme's papers and correspondence, kept in the Lille municipal library provide a new insight into this man's so discredited and disputed life in his time. Among other things, they show how, coming back from his capitivity in Russia (July 1814), this general, one of the most consistently charged and denounced of the Revolution and Empire, always presented, even nowadays, as a money-grasping shark, and a covetous and interested calculator, was the victim of his good faith and ingenuousness. Having decided, in order to hasten his return from Riga to Dunkirk, to sail back, he hired out a Danish vessel, the Coff Anna Dorothea, whose little scrupulous captain and owners tried to make him bear expenses out of proportion with the service supplied. Followed a trial full of unexpected reboundings, interrupted and delayed by the political situation and the General's exile to the United States of America. This trial only came to an end in 1820 thanks to a money sacrifice by Vandamme.

Les papiers et la correspondance de Vandamme conservés à la bibliothèque municipale de Lille éclairent d'un jour nouveau la vie de cet homme si décrié et si contesté en son temps. Entre autres choses, ils montrent comment, lors de son retour de captivité en Russie (juillet 1814), ce général, l'un des plus accusés et des plus dénoncés de la Révolution et de l'Empire, toujours présenté, même aujourd'hui, comme un rapace âpre au gain, calculateur cupide et intéressé, a été la victime de sa bonne foi et de son ingénuité. Ayant décidé d'emprunter la voie maritime pour hâter son retour de Riga à Dunker- que, il affréta un navire danois, la Coff Anna Dorothea, dont le capitaine et les armateurs, peu scrupuleux, voulurent lui faire supporter des dépenses hors de proportions avec le service fourni. Il s'ensuivit un procès à rebondissements, interrompu et retardé par la situation politique et l'exil du général aux Etats-Unis. Ce procès ne put se terminer qu'en 1820 au moyen d'un sacrifice d'argent de Vandamme.

De nagelaten papieren en de brieven van Vandamme die bewaard worden in de stedelijke bibliotheek van Rijsel werpen een nieuw licht op het leven van deze man die in zijn tijd veel kritiek moest slikken en zwart werd gemaakt. Zo blijkt nu dat de generaal die na zijn terugkeer uit Russische gevangenschap (juli 1814) een mikpunt van beschuldigingen en aanklachten werd tijdens de Revolutie en het Keizerrijk, en die nu nog altijd de reputatie meekrijgt van een berekenende en listige geld- wolf, in feite het slachtoffer werd van zijn goede trouw en zijn argeloosheid. Om zijn terugkeer van Riga naar Duinkerken wat te verhaasten nam hij een Deens schip, de Kof Anna Dorothea, waarbij de kapitein en de reders zonder scrupules een prijs aanrekenden die in geen enkele verhouding stond met de geleverde prestatie. Er volgde een procès dat herhaaldelijk onderbroken en vertraagd werd wegens de politieke situatie en de ballingschap van de generaal in de Verenigde Staten. Het procès eindigde pas in 1820, na een financiëel offer van Vandamme.
