A study of the question of how far there had been — if at all — the constitution, throughout a century, of a province consciousness, of how, in the mentalities, the behaviours, the customs, one passed from the Empire's mosaic to the notion of province, of the way finally in which the province was actually experienced by the diverse elements, crammed together at first into a new political entity, the Province, against the ancient self-interests, deep- rooted traditions, sometimes forced into clandestinity but which, profiting by the ideological up-surge, were all too ready to re-surface. On e has thus to refine the institutional analysis with the help of the results gathered by recent research particularly in the fields of religion, politics, and culture.

Etudie le problème de savoir dans quelle mesure s'était formée — ou non — pendant un siècle, une conscience provinciale, de quelle façon, dans les mentalités les comportements, les habitudes, on avait pu passer de la mosaïque impériale à la notion de province, de quelle façon enfin la province pouvait être « vécue » par les divers éléments, juxtaposés au départ dans une entité juridique nouvelle, la Province, face aux égoïsmes anciens, aux traditions bien ancrées, rentrées quelquefois dans la clandestinité mais qui, devant l'explosion idéologique et mettant à profit celle-ci, ne demandaient qu'à refaire surface. Il s'agit donc d'affiner l'analyse institutionnelle, en utilisant les résultats des recherches récentes notamment en ce qui concerne les domaines religieux, politique et culturel.

In dit artikel gaat men na in welke mate er in een eeuw een provinciaal bewustzijn ont- stond en hoe men in de mentaliteit, de gedragingen en de gewoonten vanuit het behoren tot de mozaiek van het keizerrijk tot de notie « provincie » is gekomen men bestudeert ook hoe die provincie « beleefd » werd door de verschillende elementen die in een nieuwe juri- dische entiteit, de provincie, werden verenigd, hoe bv. de tradities, het lokale egoisme schijnbaar verdwijnen maar weer te voorschijn komen in de ideologische strijd. Het gaat erom een verfljnde analyse van de instellingen te maken en daarin de resultaten van recent onderzoek op religieus, politiek en cultured gebied te verwerken.
