Valenciennes : première évaluation du patrimoine archéologique urbain

The purpose of this study is to propose a tentative assessment of Valenciennes'urban archaeological inheritance, now studied and renovated according to a carefully planned urbanisation program. We shall hint at the origins of Valenciennes (portus Valencianis, at the confluence of the Rhônelle and Scheldt rivers) and the construction of the castrum in the second half of the Xth century. It is just outside the castrum and in the near vicinity of the ancient Carlovingian Portus, that the original economic centre grew in the first half of the XIth century : the Great Borough. The continuous progress experienced in a XIIth century marked by the development of housing, is at the origin of the erection of new and wider surrounding walls, protected by ditches. At the end of the XIIth century, Valenciennes has thus assumed the aspect it was to keep until our present time. The study offers an inventory of the major urban archaeological sites, classified under diverse headings (walls, religioux monuments, housing, river and bridges, dockside). It is completed by an archaeological map and a few illustrations about historical topography.

Cette étude a pour but de proposer une première évaluation du patrimoine archéologique urbain valenciennois dont l'étude et la mise en valeur constituent deux phases d'un programme d'urbanisme bien conçu. Sont évoquées les origines de Valenciennes {portus Valencianis, à la confluence Rhônelle-Escaut) et l'apparition du castrum dans la seconde moitié du Xe siècle. C'est à la porte du castrum et dans le voisinage immédiat de l'ancien portus carolingien, que s'est installé dans la première moitié du XIe siècle le foyer initial économique : le Grand-Bourg. L'essor continu du XIIe siècle caractérisé par le développement de l'habitat est à l'origine de la construction d'une nouvelle enceinte plus vaste, protégée par un fossé. A la fin du XIIe siècle, Valenciennes a donc l'aspect qu'elle devait conserver jusqu'à l'époque contemporaine . L'étude propose un inventaire des sites archéologiques urbains importants, classés par rubriques (remparts, monuments religieux, habitat, cours d'eau et ponts, installations portuaires). Elle est complétée par un plan archéologique et quelques illustrations concernant la topographie historique.

De studie en de exploitatie van het archeologisch patrimonium van de stad Valenciennes — hier voor het eerst geëvalueerd — zijn twee fazen van een goed opgevat urbanistisch programma. De aandacht gaat eerst naar de oorsprong van Valenciennes (portus Valencianis, op de samenvloeiing Rhônelle-Schelde) en naar het verschijnen van een castrum in de tweede helft van de Xe eeuw. Voor de poort van het castrum en in de onmiddellijke nabijheid van de oude Karolingische portus ontstond, in de eerste helft van de xie eeuw, het eerste eco- nomische centrum, de Grote Burg (Grand-Bourg). De bloei in de XIIe eeuw en de ontwikke- ling van de bewoning leiden naar de bouw van een tweede omheining, groter en beschermd met een gracht. Op het einde van de XIIe eeuw ziet Valenciennes er dus uit als tot voor korte tijd. Het artikel biedt een inventaris van de belangrijke archeologische sites in de stad, geklas- seerd per rubriek (stadsmuren, religieuze gebouwen, bewoning, waterlopen en bruggen, haveninstallaties). Verder een archeologische plattefrond en enkele afbeeldingen i.v.m. de historische topografie.
