Archéologie rescue works made necessary by the building of a vast shopping mall north of Bavay led to the discovery in 1980 of a series of remnants considerably levelled down and filled up some time through the Illrd century. The filling strata contained two groups of fragmentary painted coating. The first comes from a polychrome panalled decoration with plain backgrounds, one of which having perhaps included a figurative «painting». The second of those groups was restored into a composition of framing red bands and black fillets on a white background, above a spotted pink lower part. Technical observations may lead us to think that it is in no way a second grade mural painting since the (seeming) simplicity of the decorative pattern is found along a definitely careful and strong application of the coating. The existence on other northern sites of similar paintings allows us to conclude that we are not here confronted to coarse decorations made by chance, without much reference, but that it is a specific decorative category, which in the future will have to be studied with regard to its geographic extension and its period(-s) of diffusion

Bij de bouw van een supermarkt ten noorden van Bavay hebben archeologen een reeks overblijfselen ontdekt van een gebouw dat met de grond gelijk gemaakt en geëffend werd in de loop van de IIIe eeuw. Men vond daarin fragmenten van twee groepen beschilderde bepleistering. De eerste komt van een polychroom decor met panelen met effen achter- grond, waarop misschien een figuratief tafereel stond. Met de stukken van de tweede groep heeft men een compositie kunnen reconstitueren met een rode omlijsting en een zwart netwerk op een witte grond, boven een lager gedeelte met roze vlekken. Men kan uit de observatie van de techniek afleiden dat het hier niet om tweederangswerk gaat : de schijnbare eenvoud van het dekor gaat immers gepaard met een zeer verzorgde uitvoe- ring. Daar men in andere noordelijke sites gelijkaardige dekors heeft aangetroffen, kan men stellen dat het niet om een toevallig tot stand gekomen rudimentaire beschildering gaat, maar wel om een exemplaar van een specifieke decoratieve catégorie, waarvan men in de toekomst de geografische verspreiding en de chronologie zal moeten onderzoeken.
