The architecture of southern Low Countries derives its inspiration in the late XVIII th and early XIXth centuries from Italian and above all French models, freely adapted by talented native architects. In the realm of decoration exotic and archaeologic fashions flourish (Egyptian, Gothic). Goethgebuer, the Gent architect, with his 1827 sketch-book, provides us with some examples, gloriously illustrated with etchings, of these influences. Among those selected : Walkiers's house, in the vicinity of Laeken castle by Payen the elder (1749-1798) and the Meulenaere Hotel, in Gent, by Pisson (1763-1818).

L'architecture des Pays-Bas méridionaux s'inspire à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle de modèles italiens et surtout français, interprétés libre- ment par des architectes autochtones de talent. Dans le domaine de la décoration fleurissent les modes exotiques et archéologiques (égyptien, gothique). Le recueil de Goetghebuer, architecte gantois, paru en 1827, offre quelques exemples somptueusement illustrés de gravures, de ces influences. Ont été choisis : la maison Walckiers, près du château de Laeken, œuvre de Payen l'ainé (1749-1798) et l'Hôtel Meulenaere, à Gand, œuvre de Pisson (1763-1818).

De architectuur in de zuidelijke Nederlanden put op het einde van de XVIIIe eeuw en in het begin van de XIXe eeuw inspiratie uit Italiaanse en vooral Franse voorbeelden, die door lokale architecten, met talent, vrij geïnterpreteerd wor- den. Voor de decoratie is het mode exotische en archeologische (Egyptische, gotische) modellen te gebruiken. Het album van de Gentse architect Goetghebuer (1827) biedt een paar voorbeelden (mooi geïllustreerd met platen) van die invloeden. Werden hier gekozen : het Walckiers huis, in de buurt van het kas- teel te Laken, een werk van Payen sr. (1749-1798) en het Meulenaerehotel te Gent, een werk van Pisson (1763-1818).
