It was only by the merest chance that were brought to light a whole collection of archaeologic items and a fair number of documents which had belonged to Louis Théry (1864-1949), a Lille barrister, numismatist and archaeologist. The survey of these documents and of the material, supported by a thorough enquiry into this fine scholar's life and work, gave us the opportunity of knowing better this man of the « Nord », famous for his competence in mediaeval and modern numismatics and for the excavations he directed in Thérouanne at the end of the XIXth century. Among the impressive amount of writings left by L. Théry (personal documents, speeches, lectures, legal cases, etc..) the examination of the four heavy bundles which make up the « L. Théry Manuscripts » yields a number of precious informations about ancient archaeological discoveries. If numismatics rank high inside this documentation, archaeology retains nonetheless an important position. The archaeological material, stored in the attic of Louis Théry's ancient home, reveals various sorts of items (chipped flintstones ; pottery ; bone or metal instruments ; glassware ; etc..) mostly originating in this region (Bavay, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Arras, Thérouanne, Lille, Santés, ect...). Yet some remains come from North Africa where the Lille barrister once lived. The present article is but the first part of the publishing of this collection as other documents and implements have been recovered in Louis Théry's house since this undertaking.
Le hasard a permis de retrouver une collection d'objets archéologiques et de nombreux papiers ayant appartenu à Louis Théry (1864-1949) avocat lillois, numismate et archéologue. L'étude de cette documentation et du matériel, étayée par une enquête approfondie sur la vie et les travaux de cet érudit, offre l'occasion de mieux connaître cet homme du Nord, renommé pour ses compétences en numismatique médiévale et moderne et pour les fouilles qu'il dirigea à Thérouanne à la fin du XIXe siècle. Parmi le nombre impressionnant d'écrits laissés par L. Théry (affaires personnelles, discours, conférences, affaires juridiques etc.), le dépouillement des quatre grosses liasses constituant « les Manuscrits L. Théry » fournit un certain nombre d'informations sur des découvertes archéologiques anciennes. Si la numismatique occupe une place prépondérante au sein de cette documentation, l'archéologie n'en représente pas moins une partie importante. L'étude du matériel archéologique, conservé dans le grenier de l'ancienne habitation de L. Théry, révèle des pièces de nature diverses (silex taillés ; céramique ; objets en os, métalliques ; verreries ; etc.) et d'origine surtout régionales (Bavay, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Arras, Thérouanne, Lille, Santés, etc). Cependant, certains vestiges proviennent d'Afrique du Nord où l'avocat lillois séjourna. Cet article est la première partie de la publication de cet ensemble puisque depuis sa rédaction d'autres documents et d'autres objets ont été retrouvés chez Louis Théry.
Toevallig werd een verzameling van archeologische voorwerpen en allerlei papieren uit het bezit van de Rijselse advokaat, numismaat en archeoloog, Louis Théry (1864-1949) teruggevonden. De studie van documentatie en materiaal, en een diepgaand onderzoek naar leven en werk van deze geleerde uit Noord- Frankrijk geven een juister beeld van zijn kennis op het gebied van de midde- leeuwse numismatiek en van de opgravingen in Terwaan, die hij op het einde van de XIXe eeuw leidde. L. Théry heeft een indrukwekkend aantal geschriften nagelaten (persoonlijke zaken, toespraken, rechtszaken enz.) ; en in vier grote bundels, « les Manuscrits L. Théry », vindt men een aantal inlichtingen over oude archeologische ontdek- kingen. Het gaat daarbij voornamelijk over numismatiek, en ook in belangrijke mate over archéologie ; De studie van het archeologisch materiaal bewaard op de zolder van de vroe- gere woning van L. Théry heeft alerlei stukken aan het licht gebracht (bekapte silex, keramiek, benen voorwerpen, metalen voorwerpen, glas enz,,) die vooral uit de streek afkomstig zijn (Bavay, Boulogne sur mer, Arras, Thérouanne, Rijsel, Santés enz.) Er zijn ook stukken uit Noord-Afrika waar de Rijselse advokaat verbleef. Die artikel is het eerste deel van de publikatie van dit ensemble ; ondertussen zijn nog andere voorwerpen en dokumenten in het huis van L. Théry aan het licht gekomen.
