In spite of the scarcity of records, it is possible to assess with sufficient precision the activity of the Medical Corps with the «Armée du Nord» at the beginning of the revolutionary period. The collection and evacuation of the wounded, not provided for in the regulations, are carried out in the most appalling conditions. In spite of several attempts, no ambulance material exists. The hospitals, disorganized by the Colombier reform of 1788, are re-established under the form of fixed facilities and mobile hospitals accompanying the campaigning armies : substantial gaps are to be found in their working procedure. The whole organization leaves the impression of widespread precariousness, harbinger of the serious trouble of the Imperial period.

Malgré la pauvreté des archives il est possible d'avoir une estimation assez précise du fonctionnement du service de santé à l'Armée du Nord au début de la période révolutionnaire. Le ramassage et l'évacuation des blessés, non prévus par les règlements, sont effectués dans des conditions déplorables. Malgré plusieurs essais, aucun matériel d'ambulance n'existe. Les hôpitaux, désorganisés par la réforme de Colombier en 1788, sont rétablis sous forme d'établissements sédentaires et d'hôpitaux ambulants accompagnant les armées en campagne : des lacunes importantes sont décelées dans leur fonctionnement. L'ensemble donne l'impression d'une grande précarité, annonciatrice des graves difficultés de la période impériale.

Het ophalen en evacueren van gewonden, wat niet eens voorzien was in het règlement, gebeurt in beklagenswaardige omstandigheden. Men komt er maar niet toe ambulances in te zetten. De hospitalen die door de hervorming van Colombier in 1788 gedesorganiseerd waren, worden opnieuw opgericht, als sédentaire instellingen en als veldhospitalen bij de légers. Er zijn grote lacunes in het functioneren. De algemene indruk is er een van grote onzekerheid die de moeilijkheden tijdens het keizerrijk aankondigt.
