A Power behind the Throne : Emile Roche (1893-1990). After being the Abbé Lemire's personal secretary from 1910 to 1913, Emile Roche became, from 1927 to 1944 Joseph Caillaux's closest collaborator. Could anyone imagine a better introduction to the arcana of politics ? Strengthened by this double experience, Emile Roche became an important personality of the IIIrd Republic, as leader of the Radical-Socialist Federation of the Nord, but also as a dreaded newspaper manager, surrounded as he was with the best pens of the inter-war period (Pierre Dominique, Pierre Brossolette, Bertrand de Jouvenel...). A failure in the Cambrai by-election of 1934 checked his ascension but did not prevent him from weighing on the political life of the age.

Après avoir été le secrétaire particulier de l'abbé Lemire de 1910 à 1913, Emile Roche fut de 1927 à 1944 le plus proche collaborateur de Joseph Caillaux. Pouvait-on rêver meilleure initiation aux arcanes de la politique ? Fort de cette double expérience Emile Roche devint un personnage important de la IIIe République, en tant que maître de la fédération radicale-socialiste du Nord mais aussi en tant que directeur de journal redouté, car entouré des meilleures plumes de l'Entre-deux-guerres (Pierre Dominique, Pierre Brossolette, Bertrand de Jouvenel...). Un échec aux législatives partielles de Cambrai en 1934 enraya son ascension mais ne l'empêcha aucunement de peser sur la vie politique de l'époque.

Is er een betere inwijding in de politiek denkbaar ? Met als bagage deze dubbele ervaring wordt Emile Roche een belangrijk iemand in de IIIe republiek, als leider van de radikaal-socialistische federatie van het noorden, maar ook als gevreesd direkteur van een krant, omringd door de beste pennen van het Interbellum (Pierre Dominique, Pierre Brossolette, Bertrand de Jouvenel...). Een mislukking tijdens de gedeeltelijke verkiezingen te Kamerijk in 1934 vertraagde zijn opmars maar belette hem niet door te wegen in het beleid van de tijd.
