The Bois L'Abbé (76) Sanctuary and its Ornementation. This paper is a summary of a Ph. D. thesis in which the remains of mural paintings and of architectural decorations found in the Gallo-Romain sanctuary of Bois L'Abbé were published and aims at giving a global introduction to the site. Each period is introduced, following the chronological order yielded by stratigraphical data : presentation of the architectural remains connected to each period, then of the ornemental elements that the study enabled to determine and attribute to each one. The mural paintings are inventoried through their technical characteristics and their design, as it can be reconstituted now. As a conclusion, this study deals with more general topics : the study of pictorial and architectural design enables to propose a rendering of the complete elevation of two buildings. Thanks to the details of relative chronology delivered by the excavation works, this paper brings information on the longevity of the mural paintings of Roman Antiquity. Finally this study, one of the few to concentrate on the mural paintings of sanctuaries, shows that in these latter the same type of design was apparently used as in other contemporary public or private buildings.

Cet article résume la thèse publiant les vestiges de peinture murale et de décor architectural trouvés dans le sanctuaire gallo-romain de Bois l'Abbé et vise à donner du site une présentation globale. Chaque état est présenté selon l'ordre chronologique proposé par la stratigraphie : présentation des vestiges architecturaux qui s'y rattachent, puis des ensembles décoratifs que l'étude a permis de déterminer et de lui attribuer. Les ensembles de peinture murale sont définis par leurs caractéristiques techniques et par leur décor, tel qu'on peut le restituer actuellement. En conclusion, cette étude aborde des problèmes plus généraux : l'étude du décor pictural et architectural permet de proposer une restitution de l'élévation complète de deux bâtiments. Grâce aux précisions de chronologie relative apportées par la fouille, elle apporte des informations sur la longévité des décors muraux de l'Antiquité romaine. Enfin cette étude, l'une des rares sur la peinture murale des sanctuaires, montre que ceux- ci utilisaient apparemment la même décoration que les autres bâtiments privés ou publics contemporains.

Dit artikel geeft een samenvatting van de thesis over de muurschilderingen en het architectonisch decor in het gallo-romeinse heiligdom te Bois L'Abbé en tracht tevens een algemeen beeld van de site te bieden. Elke staat wordt beschreven in de chronologische volgorde, die de stratigrafie oplegt : voorstelling van de architecturale overblijfselen in verband ermee, en vervolgens van de decoratieve ensembles die de studie heeft kunnen determineren en toewijzen. De ensembles van muurschilderingen zijn bepaald door hun technische kenmerken en hun decor, zoals men dat nu kan restitueren. In het besluit worden de problemen ruimer gesteld : de studie van het geschilderde en architectonische decor is een hulpmiddel om een complete opstand van de twee gebouwen voor te stellen. Vanuit de door de opgraving gewonnen chronologische precisie, krijgt men informatie over de levensduur van de muurschilderingen in de Romeinse oudheid. Deze voor wat de muurschilderingen in heiligdommen betreft zeldzame studie toont dat men in heiligdommen klaarblijkelijk dezelfde decoratie heeft aangewend dan in andere particulière en openbare gebouwen.
