Excavations on the Bavay Forum (1993-1997). The Sacred Area, the Cryptoportico and the South Terrace. Between 1993 and 1997, along the programme developed on the basilica of the Bavay forum, a series of diggings was carried out in the other sectors of the monumental complex, in particular in the sacred area, the cryptoportico and the terrace on which the outside shops open. This paper makes up the first part of the assessment of these excavations, dealing with the forum of the 1st and Ilnd centuries. The research led to a more precise definition of the architecture and the lay-out of the forum in its two main phases. The most characteristic aspect of the second one is the systematic adoption of the « voûte d'arête » (groin vaulting) which leads to a complete reorganization of all the previous porticoes (and in particular of the cryptoportico) without however altering their general dimensions or their levels. Inside the forum, these transformations may have led to the disparition of the temple built on the sacred area, the monument dedicated to the official cult being transfered then to the main room of the basilical plan integrated in the west wing of the cryptoportico. Outside, the second phase sees the opening of a series of vaulted galeries along the southern façade of the forum, looking on the alley that borders it. These excavations also led to the revision of the chronology usually adopted for the forum. It is now asserted that the first period goes back to the years 40-50 A.D., while the second one probably dates from the middle of the IInd century.
Entre 1993 et 1997, parallèlement au programme entrepris sur la basilique an forum de Bavay, une série de sondages a été réalisée sur les autres secteurs du complexe monumental, en particulier l'aire sacrée, le cryptoportique et la terrasse sur laquelle donnent les boutiques extérieures. Le présent article constitue la première partie du bilan de ces fouilles, consacrée au forum du Haut-Empire. Les recherches ont précisé l'architecture et la disposition des monuments du forum dans les deux états principaux qu'il a connus. L'aspect le plus caractéristique du second état est l'adoption systématique de la voûte d'arête qui entraîne une réorganisation complète de tous les portiques antérieurs (et, en particulier, du cryptoportique), sans toutefois modifier leurs dimensions générales ni leurs niveaux. A l'intérieur du forum, ces transformations s'accompagnent peut-être de la disparition du temple occupant l'aire sacrée, le monument de culte officiel pouvant alors prendre place dans la grande salle de plan basilical intégrée à la branche ouest du cryptoportique. A l'extérieur, le second état voit la création d'une série de galeries à arcades ornant la façade sud du forum, le long de la voie qui le borde. Ces fouilles ont également permis de réviser la chronologie traditionnellement adoptée pour le forum. Il est maintenant assuré que le premier état remonte aux années 40-50 ap. J.-C. tandis que le second date très probablement du milieu du IIe siècle.
Opgravingen op het Forum van Bavay. Sacrale zone, cryptoportiek en zuidterras. Tussen 1993 en 1997 werden buiten het opgravingsprogramma in de basiliek van het forum van Bavay een reeks proefsleuven gegraven in andere delen van het monumentaal complex, meer bepaald in de sacrale zone, het cryptoportiek en het zuidterras waarop de externe winkels uitgaven. Dit artikel omvat de eerste balans van die opgravingen op het forum van de vroege keizertijd. Het onderzoek heeft geleid tot een meer preciese beschrijving van de architectuur en van de plaats van de monumenten tijdens de twee belangrijkste bouwfazen die het forum gekend heeft. Het meest karakteristiek voor de tweede faze is de systematische invoering van het ribgewelf die een volledige reorganisatie van aile bestaande portieken meebrengt (en speciaal van het cryptoportiek) zonder invloed op de buitenafmeting of het niveau. Deze veranderingen vielen misschien samen, binnen op het forum, met de verdwijning van de tempel in de sacrale zone. Het monument van de officiële cultus kon dan een plaats krijgen in de grote basiliekzaal die in de westvieugel van het cryptoportiek geïntegreerd was. Aan de buitenkant wordt in de tweede faze een reek galerijen met bogen gebouwd aan de zuidgevel van het forum, langs de aangrenzende straat. Aan de hand van de opgravingen werd de chronologie herzien. Het is nu zeker dat de eerste faze opklimt tot de jaren 40-50 na Chr., terwijl de tweede waarschijnlijk van het midden van de tweede eeuw dateert.
