From November 1916 to April 1917, 200 hostages from the Nord were deported by the Germans to the Holzminden «concentration camp », in order to obtain from the French government the release of the German civilian prisoners abducted from Alsace in 1914. Doctor Carlier, a Lille medicine professor, relates in a soft-spoken, hand-written journal kept in the archives of the Nord department, the conditions of his deportation, the daily life in the camp, and the state of mind of his companions of infortune.

De novembre 1916 à avril 1917, 200 otages du Nord furent déportés par les Allemands au «camp de concentration » d'Holzminden, afin d'obtenir du gouvernement français la libération des prisonniers civils allemands enlevés en Alsace en 1914. Le Dr Carlier, professeur de médecine lillois, relate dans un journal manuscrit au style très mesuré conservé aux Archives départementales du Nord, les conditions de sa déportation, la vie quotidienne au camp et l'état d'esprit de ses compagnons d'infortune.

Tussen november 1916 en april 1917 werden 200 gijzelaars door de Duitsers gede-porteerd naar het «concentratiekamp » van Holzminden, om van de Franse regering de vrijlating te bekomen van in 1914 gevangen genomen Duitse burgers uit de Elzas. Dr. Carlier (professor geneeskunde in Rijsel) beschrijft nogal koel in een manuscript dat berust in het departementsarchief van het Noorden, de omstandigheden van zijn wegvoering, het dagelijks leven in het kamp en de geestesgesteldheid van zijn lotge-noten.
