Patrick Thollard, in collaboration with Sabine Groetembril, Excavations of the Bavay forum (1993- 1998). III. Habitat, street grid and stratigraphy south of the forum. Following works carried out on the monumental centre of the city, a series of excavations was performed on the block located south-west of the Bavay forum. It concerned the north-east angle of the block, the remaining part of the area being covered with the earth-work of the mediaeval fortification. On the western part of the area explored, two dwelling rooms, whose latest state probably dates back to the middle of the Ilnd century A.D., have been identified : a vast half-buried room and a cellar, built along a classical plan but with a vaulted ceiling in brickwork ornemented with a partially preserved painted coating. These two rooms, in direct alignment with the street, belong to a set that no doubt develops far to the south. Stratigraphical diggings carried out in the north-east of the block allowed to identify previous levels whose oldest belongs to a workshop area dedicated to iron working. Finally, this led to adding more accuracy to the history of the evolution of the street network. The pavement that runs along the cardo has known three stages, that along the decumanus only two. Only the latest stage displays a tiling made of blue limestone slabs. Chronology confirms the anteriority of the cardo and shows that the development of the decumanus, which takes place in the third quarter of the 1st century A.D., is one of the direct consequences of the construction of the first stage of the forum.
A la suite des travaux menés sur le centre monumental de la ville, une série de sondages a été réalisée sur l'îlot situé au sud-ouest an forum de Bavay. La fouille a porté sur l'angle nord-est de l'îlot, le reste du secteur étant recouvert par les terres de la fortification médiévale. A l'ouest de la zone explorée, deux pièces d'habitation, dont le dernier état date probablement du milieu du IIe s. ap. J.-C, ont été reconnues : une vaste salle semi- enterrée et une cave, de plan classique mais dont le plafond est une voûte en maçonnerie ornée d'enduits peints partiellement conservés. Ces deux pièces, alignées directement sur la rue, appartiennent à un ensemble qui se développe sans doute largement au sud. Les sondages strati graphiques entrepris dans l'angle nord-est de l'îlot ont permis de mettre au jour des niveaux antérieurs dont le plus ancien appartient une zone artisanale consacrée au travail du fer. Enfin, des précisions ont été apportées quant à l'évolution de la voirie. Le trottoir qui borde le cardo a connu trois états, celui du decumanus deux. Seul le dernier état comporte un revêtement de dalles de calcaire bleu. La chronologie confirme l'antériorité du cardo et montre que l'aménagement du decumanus, qui intervient dans le troisième quart du Ier s. ap. J.-C, est une des conséquences directes de la construction du premier état du forum.

In het raam van het onderzoek betreffende het monu- mentaal centrum van de stad werden aan het zuidwesten van het forum enkele proefsleuven gegraven. In het noordoostelijk gedeelte van deze zone nam een opgra- ving plaats ; op de rest staat de aarden wal van een mid- deleeuwse verdediging. Ten westen van de opgraving vond men twee woningen, waarvan de laatste sporen uit het midden van de 2de eeuw na Chr. dateren : een grote, half ondergrondse zaal en een kelder volgens het klas- sieke plan, met een gewelfd plafond in beschilderd metselwerk. Zij maken, aan de straatkant, waarschijnlijk deel uit van een groter geheel naar het zuiden toe. Bij het onderzoek van de stratigrafîe in het noordoostelijke deel van de zone zijn vroegere lagen aan het licht gekomen. In de oudste primeert het werk met ijzer. Het wegennet is nu nauwkeurig beschreven. Het voetpad naast de bardo heeft drie staten gekend, die van de decumanus twee. Alleen deze laatste werd met blauwe kalksteen bedekt. De chronologie bevestigt de anterioriteit van de cardo en toont dat de aanleg van de decumanus, in het derde kwart van de eerste eeuw na Chr., een gevolg is van de bouw van het eerste forum.
