Frédéric Hanut, Eric Leblois and Yves Leblois, Survey and Chronological Interpretation of the Artefacts of a Refuse Pit in Nouvelles (Mons, Hainaut Province). The site of Nouvelles was occupied in the Higher- Empire by a large agricultural facility : the excavations carried out since 1964 have revealed the variety of the archaeological material and the wealth of the ornamental fixtures of the various rooms of the main house. In 1972, the research carried out on the extension of the southern wing of the villa led to the discovery of a large refuse pit filled during the second half of the Ilnd century. The filling material of this pit delivered a large quantity of pottery : a large series of sigilla potteries from the south and the centre of Gaul but, above all, a high number of cooking implements baked in a reducing atmosphere. The pottery profile of the pit, typically Nervian, is very representative of the material in use in the pre-Antonian period in the Bavay area.

Le site de Nouvelles fut occupé au Haut-Empire par un grand établissement agricole : les fouilles menées depuis 1964 révélèrent la diversité du mobilier archéologique et la richesse de l'équipement ornemental des différentes pièces du corps de logis. En 1972, les recherches menées sur le prolongement de l'aile méridionale de la villa mirent au jour une grande fosse dépotoir comblée au cours de la seconde moitié du IIe siècle. Le remplissage de la fosse livra une grande quantité de céramique : un lot important de sigillées du Sud et du Centre de la Gaule mais surtout un nombre élevé de vases culinaires cuits en atmosphère réductrice. Le faciès céramique de la fosse, typiquement nervien, est très représentatif du mobilier en usage à la période pré-antonine dans la région de Bavay.

De site van Nouvelles werd in het late keizerrijk in beslag genomen door een grote boerderij. Sedert 1964 brachten opgravingen een grote verscheidenheid aan vondsten aan het licht, waarbij rijk versierde gebruiksvoor- werpen uit het woninggedeelte. In 1972 kon men in het verlengde van de zuidvleugel van de villa een grote afvalkuil blootleggen, die in de tweede helft van de 2de eeuw opgevuld werd. Men trof er een grote hoeveelheid keramiek aan, veel sigillata uit Zuid- en Centraal Gallië en nog meer voorraadpotten gebakken in een reductieoven. Het gaat om typische nervische produkten die in zwang waren in de streek van Bavay, vôôr de tijd van Antonius.
