Here is proposed, rather than a clinic description, a symbolist deciphering of the illness which disfigured Remy de Gourmont and covered his face with a monstruous mask. Huysmans' evocation of the Christ of Grünewald is the implicit reference of that deciphering, that intends to show how the subtle critic mode his works become his true, free and graceful, body.

Plutôt qu'une description clinique, on propose ici un déchiffrement symbolique de la maladie qui défigura Remy de Gourmont et couvrit son visage d'un masque monstrueux. L'évocation par Huysmans du Christ de Grünewald est la référence implicite de ce déchiffrement qui entend montrer comment le critique subtil fit de ses œuvres son véritable corps, libre et gracieux.
