First published in serial in the popular newspaper Le Soleil, and later in one volume by Dentu, Gaboriau's novel was warmly welcomed by the public, but failed to catch the interest of the literary critics of the time. Nowadays, critics acknowledgc that L'affaire Lerouge had the merit of being the " first" detective story, even if it was still under the influence of popular literary practices fashionable in the 19th century, such as melodrama and news items. The present study adopts a socio-crirical perspective that takes into account the relationship between the text and its temporal and spatial context. Such a perspective leads us to question the seminal quality ofthe novel and consider spreading this new genre more evenly. As for the borrowings from fictions based on news items and melodrama (sentimental fiction), borrowings from which L'affaire Lerouge could not easily be freed, the socio-critical study shows that their re-evaluation can lead us to reconsider the literary and ideological issues ofthe novel. In both cases (that of the novelty of the genre or of penalizing influences), taking into account various types of imagination will enable us to nuance our reading of the social aspect found in novelistic detective stories.

Publié en roman feuilleton dans le journal populaire Le Soleil, avant de connaître une édition en volume chez Dentu, le roman de Gaboriau connut un grand succès auprès du public, à défaut d'en connaître un autre auprès de la critique littéraire de l'époque. Lorsque la critique contemporaine se penche aujourd'hui sut L ' affaire Lerouge, elle reconnaît à l'oeuvre le privilège d'être la «première» du genre policier, avec comme revers à la médaille de garder encore des traces profondes de certaines pratiques paralittéraires en vogue au XIXe siècle, comme le mélodra ¬ me er le fait divers. La présente étude adopte une perspective d'analyse sociocritique, attentive aux relations texte/ hots-texte, afin de replacer le roman en question dans son temps et son lieu. Une telle perspective conduit, pour ce qui concerne la qualité d'uvre inaugurale, à la remettre en cause au profit d'une naissance générique mieux partagée; quant aux emprunts aux fictions fait-diversière et mélodramatique (sentimentale) dont L ' affaire Lerouge ne se serait que très difficilement dégagée, l'étude sociocritique montre que leur réévaluation peut aboutir à la mise au jour des enjeux littéraires et idéologiques du roman. Dans un ois comme dans l'autre (primauté distinctive ou influences pénalisantes), la prise en compte des imaginaires permet de nuancer la lecture de la socialité du texte romanesque policier.
