But what do they really mean ? What is the "presence of God" ? How is God present to man, and how is man present before God ? How can one fill the void between the Uncreated and the creature ? To begin with, do we know precisely what "presence" means ? The danger is to make of God an idol, and to substitute our imagination for reality, to live in an allusion. This article does not pretend to resolve all of these problems ; it will have achieved the author's aim if it helps the reader to seek an ever more authentic "face-to-face encounter with God" (first and foremost through prayer).
