Public health and general medical pratice : the example of aids. Given the social role devoted to the general practicioners, they contribute with other instances to the global issues of public health. However, the daily medical practice, closely related to patient's personal request, represents another aspect of their activities. These two different levels may be analysed to point out the conflicting situation of the general practicioner's when they have to take into account both public health policy and patients personal convictions. Refering to aids, when gp recommends a patient to have a test, or gives him the results, or when he has to follow him after, he is able to act as a «mediator ». This situation means that questions related to aids cannot be examined only from a social control point of view.

La santé publique, par ses instances, poursuit des buts collectifs auxquels concourt en partie, de la place sociale qu'il occupe, le praticien libéral. Cependant, la pratique médicale liée à la demande des sujets nous instruit sur la confrontation entre les discours politiques et les vies singulières. Le médecin qui assume la passation des tests, le don des résultats, l'accompagnement des patients, sert d'agent de médiation, empêchant de refermer les questions du sida sur le seul versant du contrôle social.
