Bishop Lambert of Arras (1093/94–1115), Boulogne-sur-Mer, Bibliothèque Municipale, 84 and the historical, liturgical and documentary legacies of the former bishopric of Cambrai/Arras

This paper considers the significance of Boulogne-sur-Mer, BM 84 as «founding manuscript » of the bishopric of Arras (1093/ 94). Gathering historiographical, liturgical and juridical arguments, the manuscript is suggestive of the immense effort invested in the justification and consolidation of the new bishopric at a very early stage in its history, and in representing first bishop Lambert (1093/ 94-1115) as a major proponent of the then-current Church reforms. Two hypotheses are presented. The first is that the typology of the texts included in the volume, their contents, and their historical outlook reveal that Bishop Lambert and his associates simultaneously sought to connect with the region’s past as part of the bishopric of Cambrai/ Arras, and to indicate that, as far as episcopal authority was concerned, Lambert’s tenure signalled a profound rupture with that same past. The second is that the disorganized appearance of this manuscript derives not so much from the rushed nature of its conception or from a lack of competence on the part of its creators, but from a «farragineous » method commonly adopted by authors and compilers of the intellectual circles to which Lambert belonged.

Cet article considère l’importance du ms. Boulogne-sur-Mer, BM 84 comme «manuscrit fondateur » de l’évêché d’Arras (1093/ 94). Rassemblant des arguments historiographiques, liturgiques et juridiques en un seul volume, il est révélateur de l’effort considérable investi dans la justification et la consolidation du nouvel évêché au cours des toutes premières années de son existence, ainsi que dans la représentation de son premier évêque Lambert comme promoteur de la réforme ecclésiastique alors en vigueur. Deux hypothèses sont proposées. Premièrement, la typologie des textes insérés dans le volume, leur contenu ainsi que leurs perspectives historiques indiquent que Lambert et ses associés cherchaient simultanément à établir des liens avec le passé de la région dans le cadre (géographique) du double diocèse de Cambrai/ Arras, et, dans la mesure où son autorité épiscopale était engagée, à marquer par son mandat une rupture profonde avec ce même passé. Deuxièmement, l’aspect hétéroclite de ce manuscrit ne provient pas tant d’une rédaction hâtive ou d’un manque de compétence de la part de ses auteurs, mais d’une méthode de compilation aléatoire fréquemment attestée dans la production écrite du milieu intellectuel auquel appartenait Lambert.
