The purpose of this article is to examine the philological features of the second book of Cassiodorus’ Institutiones, the so-called recensio Δ, characterized by a greek mould ; the handbook transmits extensive interpolations added in the chapters of grammar, dialectic, mathematics and geometry and has (in the final section) an appendix including rare texts and a rich selection of excerpta from the Augustinus’ works. The presence of marginalia and diagrams inspired by logical-rhetorical tradition of Hellenistic mould shows that the handbook is authentic and has been conceived for an audience of aristocratic extraction and bilingual environment (greek and latin). Instead, the interpolations included in the text come from an anthology of Boethius’ dialectic works (better known as the Codex Renati), copied in Constantinople, which according to recent studies was present in the library of Vivarium ; this suggests that probably they were inserted in the recensio l iving C assiodorus. T he c omposition of the Appendix reveals heterogeneous features, because it collects some ancient texts (as the Ordo generis Cassiodororum) and some texts attributed to 8th and 9th Centuries (as the Carmen ventorum). In particular, the same choice of extracts from Augustinus is found in De institutione clericorum of Hrabanus Maurus : this evidence suggests that the appendix has been assembled and added to the authentic handbook in a environment very close to school of the praeceptor Germaniae, perhaps Fulda.

L’articolo è dedicato all’esame filologico del secondo libro delle Institutiones di Cassiodoro, nella cosiddetta recensio Δ, caratterizzata da una forte patina grecizzante ; la parte manualistica trasmette estese interpolazioni inserite nei capitoli di grammatica, dialettica, matematica e geometria e presenta nella sezione finale un’Appendice comprendente testi molto rari e una ricca selezione di excerpta tratti dall’opera di Agostino. La presenza di marginalia e diagrammi ispirati alla tradizione logico-retorica di matrice ellenistica prova che la parte manualistica è originale ed è stata concepita per un pubblico di estrazione aristocratica e di ambiente biligue (greco e latino) ; le interpolazioni subite dal testo provengono invece da una silloge di testi boeziani (meglio nota come codex Renati), copiata a Costantinopoli, che secondo studi recenti era presente nella biblioteca di Vivarium ; è dunque probabile che vi siano stati inserite vivente Cassiodoro. Quanto all’Appendice, la sua composizione rivela tratti eterogenei, perché raccoglie sia testi più antichi (come il noto Ordo generis Cassiodororum) sia testi ascrivibili ai secoli VIII-IX (come il Carmen ventorum). In particolare, la stessa scelta di estratti agostiniani si ritrova nel De institutione clericorum di Rabano Mauro : tale coincidenza fa pensare che l’Appendice sia stata assemblata e aggiunta al manuale autentico di Cassiodoro in un ambiente molto vicino a quello del praeceptor Germaniae, forse a Fulda.

Le but de cet article est d’examiner les caractéristiques philologiques du deuxième livre des Institutiones de Cassiodore, dans sa recension Δ, caractérisée par une forte patine grecque. L’ouvrage transmet de nombreuses interpolations insérées dans les chapitres consacrés à la grammaire, à la dialectique, aux mathématiques et à la géométrie et présente (dans la dernière section) une annexe comprenant des textes rares et une riche sélection d’excerpta d’oeuvres d’Augustin. La présence de marginalia et schémas inspirés par la tradition logique et rhétorique du moule hellénistique montre que la recension est authentique et a été conçue pour un public d’extraction aristocratique dans un environnement bilingue (greco-latin). En revanche, les interpolations incluses dans le texte proviennent d’une anthologie d’oeuvres dialectiques de Boèce (mieux connue sous le titre de Codex Renati), copiée à Constantinople, et qui, selon des études récentes, était présente dans la bibliothèque de Vivarium. Elles ont probablement été insérées dans la recension Δ du vivant de Cassiodore. Quant à l’Appendix, sa composition offre des caractéristiques hétérogènes : il rassemble en effet quelques textes plus anciens (comme l’Ordo generis Cassiodororum) et certains textes attribués aux 8e et 9e siècles (comme le Carmen Ventorum). On note également que le même choix d’extraits d’Augustin se retrouve dans De institutione clericorum de Raban Maur : une telle coincidence permet de suggérer que l’Appendix a été assemblé et ajouté au manuel authentique de Cassiodore dans un environnement très proche de celui du Praeceptor Germaniae, peut-être à Fulda.
