Le gisement des Ganntour se divise en une zone sèche et une zone «noyée», en dessous du niveau hydrostatique, où les phosphorites sont noires et dolomitiques. La présence de microplancton organique, dinokystes en particulier, dans le phosphate noir, conduit à penser que la dolomite est primaire, la calcite des phosphates blancs de surface vides de ces organismes étant secondaire, d'altération superficielle. Une relation entre la qualité et la quantité des microorganismes du plancton et la nature minéralogique et chimique des roches est dégagée : les zones à grande abondance de microfossiles organiques sont les zones à opale ou à dolomite. Ces faits orientent vers la définition d'un milieu de genèse des phosphates aux caractères confinés se rapprochant du milieu évaporitique.
