La kaolinite, l'illite, la montmorillonite et la pyrophyllite sont les produits d'une intense altération hydrothermale d'une granodiorite dans la région des mines d'Aghios Philippos (Kirki, Grèce du Nord). La granodiorite altérée se trouve au contact d'une veine minéralisée, qui se caractérise par un remplissage de blende, pyrite, galène et chalcopyrite. Comme elle résulte de l'altération hydrothermale, on observe une brusque diminution des éléments Ca, Mg, Na, Fe et Al et une augmentation relative de Si, en allant de la roche inaltérée à la veine minéralisée.
