"Alliance, descent, siblinghood”: from biological truths to metaphors Is kinship a social matter or a biological given? This question, which plagues anthropologists, has been addressed in two manners: firstly, by opposing descent and alliance and, secondly, through the status granted to metaphor in the realm of kinship. In many exotic societies, siblinghood •which we regard as the quintessence of kinship •determines alliance as well as gender and generational hierarchies. É. Copet-Rougier here explores this issue on the basis of here Kako material, gathered in Cameroon. In the fields of symbolism and social life, kinship encompasses nature (the fact of birth) by playing with metaphors, as in the case of the Roman biological metaphor of the posthumously born venter, or, inversely, in that of disincarnate or spiritual kinship. Kinship must be defined as a constrained metaphor that explains our •lack of astonishment when faced with the amazing beliefs of exotic savages as well as our own astonishment when faced with new forms of parenthood that have emerged in our own society.’

RÉSUMÉ: La parenté est-elle affaire sociale ou donnée biologique? Cette question, qui hante les anthropologues, est abordée de deux manières: d’abord à partir de l’opposition entre alliance et filiation, puis avec le statut accordé à la métaphore parentale dans la parenté. Dans de nombreuses sociétés exotiques, la germanité •pour nous quintessence de la consanguinité •dit aussi l’alliance, ainsi que la hiérarchie des sexes et des générations, comme E. Copet-Rougier nous le montre chez les Kako du Cameroun. C’est que la parenté, d’un même mouvement, encadre la nature (la naissance) dans le symbolique et le social en jouant des métaphores. Métaphore biologisante du «venter» pour l’enfant romain né posthume; ou au contraire nécessité d’une parenté désincarnée dans la parenté spirituelle. En fait la parenté doit être définie comme une métaphore contrainte, qui explique notre «absence d’étonnement à l’égard des croyances fantastiques des sauvages exotiques et notre étonnement face aux nouvelles formes parentales apparues dans notre propre société».
