METHODS GEORGES BENGUIGUI The Observation of Incidents and Crises When you think of using observation in a sociological research, authors and handbooks generally advise you to try to observe daily life. They tell you to avoid what is exceptional, what is not the everyday normal life. Actually this paper agrees with that attitude. However it tends to demonstrate that in certain cases the observation of crisis and incidents can produce new information. It is often impossible to get that information during the daily life or by questionnaires. Only crisis can reveal some hidden behaviors One can read generally the meaning of that information by comparing it with the «normal» events.

RÉSUMÉ: Quand on envisage d’utiliser l’observation dans une recherche sociologique, on constate que les auteurs et les manuels vous conseillent généralement d’essayer d’observer la vie quotidienne. Ils vous disent d’éviter ce qui est exceptionnel, ce qui n’appartient pas à la vie normale de tous les jours. Dans cet article l’auteur, tout en étant d’accord avec cette attitude, tend cependant à démontrer que, dans certains cas, l’observation des crises et des incidents peut apporter des informations nouvelles. Il est souvent impossible d’obtenir ces informations durant la vie quotidienne ou par questionnaires. Seule la crise permet de révéler certains comportements cachés. Généralement on peut lire la signification de ces informations par comparaison avec les événements «normaux».
