The author presents a detailed analysis of the construction of an apparently unambiguous «data» — the profession of the fathers of university students — and shows how inevitably a bias is introduced in the production of statistical series. This demonstration of the possible deviations occuring at the different phases of the process (obtaining the data, coding, presentation of the results) does not only urge the reader to use such data with care ; it also recalls what sociologists should at all times bear in mind : that numbers are never more than a social fact like any other.

Faut-il faire confiance aux données statistiques dont tout sociologue, un jour ou l'autre, est tenté de faire usage ? L'auteur dévoile ici à l'aide d'une analyse minutieuse des conditions de fabrication d'une «donnée» apparemment dénuée d' ambiguïté — la profession du père des étudiants inscrits en faculté — la genèse des biais qui se glissent inévitablement dans la production de toute série statistique. Cette mise à jour des dérives possibles aux différentes étapes du processus (saisie des donnée, codage, présentation des résultats) n'incite pas seulement à la prudence. Elle sert de prétexte pour rappeler ce qu'il faut à tout prix conserver en mémoire : le chiffre n'est jamais qu'un fait social comme les autres.
