Space and firms environment: firms and foreign markets. — There is an interaction between the firm and its environment, which translates itself into physical and human currents backed by an information network. Organized towards a well defined market, this network is deeply modified by the international outlook of the firm. However, the geography of the world market is not abstract space : institutions, cultural divisions and even the interaction between firms create a fragmentation. Finally, in order to adjust to the evolution of its environment, a firm has a choice of strategies which pushes it to redefine its structures and its operations and allow the firm not to have a passive reaction to the impact of the environment.

L'entreprise établit avec son environnement un réseau de flux physiques et humains, doublé d'un réseau d'informations. Organisé pour un marché de dimensions données, ce réseau est fortement modifié par l'ouverture internationale de la firme. Mais la géographie du marché mondial n'est pas un espace abstrait : elle est cloisonnée par les institutions, par les divisions culturelles et par le jeu même des entreprises. Enfin, pour s'adapter à l'évolution de son environnement, l'entreprise dispose d'un choix de stratégies qui la conduisent à redéfinir ses structures et ses opérations et lui permettent de ne pas subir passivement l'impact du milieu.
