We try in this article to characterize the research on personal learning environments (PLE) and to trace its evolution based on an analysis of papers that illustrates the various conceptualizations on this matter. The notions of concrete object, research object and scientific object (Davallon, 2004) provide a framework for our study allowing for the identification of four markers which show diverse ways to approach PLE. Thus, the article is structured in four parts : the genesis of the PLE research, the quest for a definition of PLE, the problematization and theorization of PLE, and the confrontation through experiment. Our study is a contribution to the debate on PLE as a research thematic, on its formalization, its scientificity, and on the opportunity to develop a shared vison among researchers from different disciplines interested by PLE.

Nous tentons dans cet article de caractériser la recherche sur les environnements personnels d’apprentissage (EPA) et d’en baliser l’évolution en nous appuyant sur l’analyse de travaux qui illustrent la variété des conceptualisations en la matière. Les notions d’objet concret, d’objet de recherche et d’objet scientifique telles que définies par (Davallon, 2004) servent de cadre à notre étude et permettent d’identifier quatre repères témoignant de diverses manières d’aborder les EPA. Ainsi, l’article est structuré en quatre parties : la genèse de la recherche sur les EPA, la quête d’une définition des EPA, la problématisation et la théorisation des EPA, et la confrontation à l’expérience. Notre étude se veut une contribution à la réflexion sur les EPA en tant que thématique de recherche, sur sa formalisation, sur sa scientificité et sur l’opportunité d’élaborer une vision qui soit partagée par les chercheurs des différentes disciplines qui s’intéressent aux EPA.
