Upon his arrival in Rome, Aubin-Louis Millin, a curator and professor at the Bibliothèque nationale, wrote an article on the Roman carnival. This is the only text that the antiquary and archaeologist devoted to Rome, a city he nevertheless considered as unparalleled for scholars seeking to further their research on the history of monuments and of the arts. However, this text, recounting a yearly and ephemeral event, sheds an interesting light on Millin's methods and on his conception of the study of the past. Comparing it with another text on the same Phenomenon - Goethe's Römische Carneval - allows us chiefly to gauge the impact of the new archaeological methods and the contribution of a different field, of which Millin was one of the proponents in France - ethnology.
