Résumé En

In the process of making out explanatory models which articulate a literary theory, an historical one and a theory of the meaning, critical exegesis does not pretend to reach the absolute truth but rather a valid and fertile, even if only provisional image of the text. It does not replace the text ; it is at its service. Notwithstanding its limitations, it is truly theology because of and proportioned to its scientific character. Its human quest of the human meaning of the biblical texts brings faith back to the humble contingence God wished it to be written in, preserving it from the dangers of a fundamentalist positivism and the diversions to idealism and the gnosis.
