Résumé En

«And what if, after death, there were nothing. ..». During the last months of her life, while keeping her faith in God intact, Theresa of Lisieux so closely shared the temptation of doubt concerning the hereafter that she felt herself to be a close companion to the men and women of her times who were racked by anxiety and by the opacity of the mystery of faith and who were threatened by unbelief. A hundred years later, our generation «whose faith has been burst into pieces», seems to have difficulty in healing its wounds. Jean-Baptiste Metz makes us pay attention to the positive aspects of modern questionings and the challenge which they offer : disenchantment with the world or transition from the world of the divine to a «hominized» world. It is however in the flesh of this concrete history that faith has to be lived out as a trusting giving up of oneself. Christians today can as much as, if not more than, Theresa of Lisieux deepen their faith and give witness to it as a joyful hope by loyally becoming «companions of ambient unbelief».
