THE FUTURE OF AN INCERTAIN TOWN French cities and urban areas have reached a turning point at a time when, the question of their future is evoked in various terms and according to various modalities. The slowing down of urbanization imposes a new may of thinking about the city and of forseeing its mutations. After having been done this is in the process of being redone differently less by the addition of new population and territories than by the replaning and reallocation of existing spaces. In this reconstruction of urban areas one may make the hypothesis that the modernity of neighbouring suburbs, imagined after the war, is of great importance. A place of potential confrontation or integration of culturally different social groups, it is here that the future of the city lies.

Les villes et les agglomérations françaises sont arrivées à un tournant de leur histoire, à un moment où, en d'autres termes et selon d'autres modalités, se pose la question de leur devenir. Le ralentissement du mouvement d'urbanisation impose une nouvelle manière de penser la ville et d'appréhender ses mutations. Après avoir été faite, celle-ci est en train de se faire autrement moins par l'adjonction de populations et de territoires nouveaux que par un réaménagement et une réallocation des espaces existants. Dans cette recomposition du tissu urbain, on peut faire l'hypothèse que la modernité de la proche banlieue imaginée dans les années de l'après-guerre occupera une place importante. Lieu potentiel d'affrontement ou d'intégration de groupes sociaux aux cultures différentes, c'est là que peut se .jouer l'avenir de la ville.
