Discours et identité groupale : le cas des résidents d'un lotissement

Starting from the assumption that a housing estate brings together a specific type of human group, we decided to study the emergence of social identity in a new residential unit. We, therefore, engaged in an investigation by interviewing the inhabitants of the estate. It became clear that the symbolic aspect had considerable importance and that the language of the residents had distinct characteristics that could be used to identify the group. A linguistic approach revealed the mechanism leading to the emergence of group identity. In our study, the inhabitants identified themselves through negative reference to the group they had belonged to previously. This would appear to be a msyor obstacle to the development of interpersonal relations within the housing estate and the elaboration of community awareness.

Considérant l'hypothèse selon laquelle un lotissement constitue un type spécifique de groupement humain, nous nous sommes proposé d'étudier l'émergence d'une identité collective au niveau d'un lotissement nouvellement créé. Pour ce faire, nous avons réalisé une enquête par entretiens auprès des habitants de ce quartier. Nous avons constaté l'importance de la dimension symbolique, le groupe de résidants se définissant dans et par le langage. Une approche linguistique nous a permis de rendre compte de la dynamique identitaire des habitants. Ceux-ci se définissent essentiellement par référence négative au groupe de résidants auquel ils appartenaient antérieurement, cet aspect constituerait un obstacle majeur au développement d'une «conscience communautaire».
