Résumé En

Semantic comparison of terms discloses several representations of power : either sovereign authority requiring obedience (imperare, imperium, dominari, rex, and their associated negative connotations) ; the expression of will, whether by incitation (iubere) or strong approval encouraging action (deis approbantibus) ; the determination of a bearing beyond competing tensions (gubernare, rector) ; or a dynamics (the uis uerborum or contentio of eloquence, political potential or potestas, or giving way to or resisting passion as expressed in a variety of metaphors).
