The final chapter of the De spectaculis let see what are the real shows for the Christians - in this case, the spectacles of the Last Days, notably the righteous punishment inflicted on all the enemies of Christ. This page is a brilliant piece of the peroration. A shocking piece too : many critics accuse its violence and little evangelical tone. The critics are fast workers. To understand Spec. 30, one must read it as a whole, put it back in its historical and cultural context, analyze carefully its stylistic and mental patterns, and exactly weigh its intentions. Then one discovers a more complex and secret text, more moving perhaps as well - the echo of which in the reader’s mind makes its way deeper than would do the magnificent bursts of cruel fireworks...
