Tristram Shandy was published in five stages over a period of eighty-five months. Any reading of the book must take this into account, as well as the fact that Tristram Shandy did not start out as a •novel” inthe modern sense of that word. This article, which has been written with a novice reader in mind, focuses on aspects of Sterne’s art that are usually overlooked and offers an overview of possible frames of reference with which to classify one of the most puzzling books of English literature.
