The Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) collects information from employers about the numbers of work-related injuries and illnesses occurring to employees. Establishment Address Records contains street address information for use in matching. SOII response is mandatory for most surveyed units. The data collected are from injury logs maintained by employers, as required by OSHA regulation. OSHA recordkeeping rules guide which injuries are recorded and how they are classified. SOII scope includes employees working in the great majority of private sector and state and local government establishments. Employers in agricultural production having 10 or fewer employees are out of scope for SOII, as are self-employed persons, private household workers, and United States Postal Service and federal government workers. Prior to 2008, state and local government data are available for only a selection of states. The SOII is a joint state/federal program, where participating states share in collection costs and duties. SOII data cannot support estimates for individual nonparticipating states. National estimates are based on data from all states, including nonparticipating states. An overview of the survey can be found in the BLS Handbook of Methodsat: https://www.bls.gov/opub/hom/soii/home.htm
