Résumé 0

The Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) is an annual census enumerating all work-related fatal injuries occurring within the United States. The CFOI is a federal-state cooperative program that has been implemented in all 50 States and the District of Columbia since 1992. To compile counts that are as complete as possible, the census uses multiple sources to identify, verify, and profile fatal worker injuries. Information about each workplace fatal injury is obtained by cross-referencing the source records, such as death certificates, workers' compensation reports, and federal and state agency administrative reports. To ensure that fatal injuries are work-related, cases are substantiated with two or more independent source documents, or a source document and a follow-up questionnaire. The CFOI data contain detailed information on decedents including age, gender, race, the worker's industry and occupation, and other characteristics. CFOI data also contain detailed information on the circumstances of the event including location and date, proximate cause, and worker activity during the incident. Each CFOI record additionally has a narrative text field describing the fatal incident. To be in-scope for CFOI a fatality must be work-related; it must have resulted from a traumatic injury; and it must have arisen in an incident occurring within the United States, its territories, or its territorial waters or airspace. Deaths satisfying such conditions and that occur during a given calendar year are in-scope for CFOI, even if they arise from an incident in a prior calendar year.
