Après avoir fait le point sur sa carrière scientifique jusqu’en 1914, nous suivons l’itinéraire du mathématicien Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963) à travers la Première Guerre mondiale, période peu présente dans ses biographies. Apparaît l’intensité de sa mobilisation, à la fois scientifique pour la défense nationale, notamment à l’Académie des sciences, et politique. Il participe à la création de plusieurs organisations d’intellectuels mobilisés pour contrer l’offensive idéologique allemande, avec le souci de convaincre les pays neutres. Son positionnement politique, écartant à la fois le pacifisme et le bellicisme, est original. L’unité entre ses engagements scientifiques et politiques pendant la Grande Guerre et dans l’après-guerre, cherchant constamment à allier la rigueur et le droit, confère à Hadamard une stature d’intellectuel engagé, dans la tradition française, ce qui gagnerait à être reconnu par l’historiographie.

After summarizing the scientific career of the mathematician Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963) up to 1914, we follow his itinerary through the period of the First World War, which is almost completely omitted in most biographies devoted to him. In this manner, the intensity of his mobilization emerges clearly, both in scientific terms, in view of national defense, and at a political level. In view of convincing neutral countries, he took part in the creation of several organizations mobilizing intellectuals against the German intellectual offensive. Stepping away from both naïve pacificism and war-mongering, his political positioning seems original. Because of unifying features in his scientific and political commitments during the war and its aftermath, Hadamard thus acquired the standing of an engaged intellectual in the French tradition, which should be better acknowledged by the literature.
