In the animated confusion of the village fete depicted in this Bruegel painting, gestures of peace and reconciliation jostle side-by-side with signs of conflict: in the foreground, a few centimetres from the knife hanging from the musician’s belt, two children are shaking hands; at the table, rowdy, drunken men tap each other in the hand as they share wine; behind them, lovers kiss.
