Epeli Hau’ofa is a true Pacific writer; in his Tales of the Tikongs, he portrays the imaginary island of Tiko, a fictitious blend of all the islands he personally knows. These twelve short stories about Pacific people and their culture sketch the absurdity of life when taken in the process of ‘development’. Epeli Hau’ofa looks at indigenous responses to politics, love, religion, culture and foreign aid in the context of cultural and economic imperialism. Tales of the Tikongs has long been regarded as a milestone in Pacific literature and establishes Epeli Hau’ofa’s reputation as an acute and delightful observer of his fellow countrymen.
