Aujourd’hui, lorsqu’on évoque le passé industriel de Guebwiller, la famille Schlumberger est tout de suite citée, tellement son empreinte sur la ville est indéniable. Du quartier industriel à la construction de l’hôpital pour enfants, en passant par l’habitat patronal, le parc de la Neuenbourg, les commandes artistiques mais aussi la constitution d’un domaine viticole de grande réputation, le patrimoine de Guebwiller rappelle la prépondérance de cette famille d’industriels du textile. L’urbanisme général de la ville est marqué par leur activité. Un faubourg apparaît au cours du XIXe siècle, métamorphosant complètement le paysage de la vallée et rassemblant deux communes : au paysage champêtre succède une mer de sheds, sous l’action d’une entreprise bâtisseuse. Including the industrial district, the construction of the children’s hospital, the employers’ living places, the Neuenbourg park, the commissioning of art works, but also the setting up of a widely recognized wine estate, Guebwiller’s varied heritage is evocative of the predominance of this textile industry family. The town-planning itself is also marked by their industrial creativity. A suburban extension built in the 19th century totally transformed the landscape of the valley, bringing together two, so far separate, towns: the rural landscape being replaced by a host of sheds fostered by the firm’s building frenzy. And yet, Guebwiller’s industrial history is not restricted to the Schlumbergers’: a brief survey would also mention the importance of other firms, whose memory is less vivid. It is likewise necessary to underline the undeniable role played by the allied Bourcart family with its charities, namely the workers’ housing project. It would thus be fairer to refer to the Schlumberger-Bourcart clan and its political, social and cultural activities in the city.

Von dem Industrieviertel bis zum Bau eines Kinderkrankenhauses, die Arbeitersiedlung, die Neuenbourg-Parkanlage, künstlerischen Aufträge, bis zu der Gründung eines Weingutes, das ganze Kulturerbe von Guebwiller erinnert an die Vormachstellung dieser Familie von Magnaten der Textilindustrie. Die ganze Stadtplanung ist ein Ergebnis ihrer Betriebsamkeit. Im 19. Jahrhundert bildet sich ein Vorort, der das ganze Tal verändert und in dem zwei Gemeinden aufgehen. Die ländliche Umgebung wird durch Werkhallen überzogen. Die industrielle Geschichte von Guebwiller lässt sich jedoch nicht nur auf die der Familie Schlumberger reduzieren: ein rascher Überblick erinnert uns daran, dass auch andere Textilbetriebe, die weniger das Gedächtnis geprägt haben, vorhanden waren. Erwähnt werden muss die verbündete Familie Bourcart und ihre sozialen Einrichtungen, besonders ihre Arbeitersiedlung. Hier sollte man eigentlich von einem Schlumberger-Bourcart-Klan sprechen und dessen gemeinschaftliche Einbeziehung in das politische, soziale und kulturelle Leben der Stadt.
