Located on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara near the Dardanelles, Lampsacus (the modern-day Lapseki) was settled by colonists from Phocaea (Foça) and Miletus. Under the control, successively, of Lydia and Persia, Lampsacus paid a tax of 12 talents (approximately 300 kg of silver) to the Delian League established by Athens to counteract the Persian threat.
