Acts of Exposure: Reckoning with Representations of HIV and Sexual Identity in Morocco

This article presents a hybrid, co-authored exchange between an American academic and scholar of Morocco, Anne Montgomery, and a Moroccan writer and activist, Abderrahim El Habachi. It is a multi-textual work that was produced through an experimental, collaborative method. At the center is an original piece of creative non-fiction, The Story of Naoufel (by El Habachi), which explores the challenges faced by a young gay Moroccan struggling to find care and a sense of belonging after being diagnosed with HIV. The story serves as a springboard for wide-ranging conversations between Anne and Abderrahim on the multiple valences of discrimination, shame, pride, positivity, and activism. This work of methodological bricolage strives to offer concrete lessons for public health programs while simultaneously challenging extant forms of expertise, knowledge production, and the simplistic categories and dichotomies that often frame representations of HIV positivity and sexual identity in Morocco.

Cet article présente un échange hybride coécrit par une chercheuse américaine spécialiste du Maroc, Anne Montgomery, et un écrivain militant marocain, Abderrahim El Habachi. C’est une œuvre pluri-textuelle qui a été produite au moyen d’une méthode expérimentale collaborative. Au centre, se trouve une œuvre originale littéraire non-fictionnelle, The Story of Naoufel. Ce texte explore les difficultés surmontées par un jeune Marocain gay en quête de soutien et de soins après l’annonce de sa séropositivité. Il sert de tremplin à des conversations réflexives entre Anne et Abderrahim concernant les valences multiples de la discrimination, la honte, la fierté, et l’activisme. Cette œuvre de bricolage méthodologique souhaite remettre en question les notions actuelles de l’expertise, de la production du savoir, et des catégories et dichotomies trop simplistes qui organisent souvent les représentations de la séropositivité et l’identité sexuelle au Maroc.

يقدم هذا المقال تبادل أفكار لعنصرين مختلفين وبتأليف مشترك بين الباحثة الأكاديمية الأمريكية المتخصصة في دراسة المغرب، آن مونتغمري، والكاتب والناشط المغربي، عبد الرحيم الحباشي. إنه عمل متعدد النصوص أُنتج بمنهجية تجريبية تعاونية. تحتل مركزَ المقال قطعةٌ إبداعية غير تخيّلية، هي قصة نوفل (كتبها الحباشي)، التي تستكشف المصاعب التي ينجح في تخطيها شاب مغربي مثلي الجنس يبحث عن العون والعلاج بعد تشخيص إصابته بفيروس نقص المناعة البشرية المكتسبة. وتلعب هذه القصة دور واسطة تمكن من محادثات تأملية بين آن وعبد الرحيم حول تعدد أشكال التمييز وإحساس العار والفخر والنشاط النضالي. ويأمل عمل الترميق المنهجي هذا أن يضع من جديد على المحك المفهوم الحالي لخبرة وإنتاج المعرفة والتصنيفات والتقسيمات الثنائية الساذجة التي كثيرًا ما تؤطر تمثلات الإصابة بفيروس نقص المناعة البشرية المكتسبة والهوية الجنسية في المغرب.
